In one sentence: Metadata is hidden information stored inside a file, such as where a photo was taken or who wrote a document.
Why it matters: When you share a photo, the location saved in it may go with it. Apple says people you share a photo with may be able to see where it was taken. Documents can also carry details such as the author’s name. You can usually remove this before sharing.
One thing to do: On an iPhone, pick a photo, tap Share, then Options, and turn off Location before you send it. Other phones and programs have similar choices.
