Public link

In one sentence: A public link opens a file for anyone who has it, but in Google Drive the word “Public” has a stronger meaning.

Why it matters: Google says that with “Public”, anyone can search on Google and get access to your file without signing in. With “Anyone with the link”, people need the link first. Your options may depend on whether your account is personal, work or school.

One thing to do: Before you share a private file, choose “Restricted” and add the names or email addresses of the people you mean.

Related terms: anyone with the link, permissions, privacy settings
