Recovery code

In one sentence: A recovery code, also called a backup code, is a one-time code that lets you sign in if you lose your phone or cannot use your usual second step.

Why it matters: Each code works only once. Services such as Google ask you to keep the codes somewhere safe, like where you keep your passport. Never share them. Google says it asks for a backup code only at sign-in.

One thing to do: Download or print the backup codes for your main email account, and store them in a safe place.
