VPN

In one sentence: A VPN (virtual private network) is a service that sends your internet traffic through the VPN company’s servers.

Why it matters: It can hide what you do from your internet provider or a public Wi-Fi network, but it does not make you anonymous. You must trust the VPN company instead, and websites can still recognize you if you sign in or share details. Some VPN apps have been found not to encrypt all traffic, or to share data with others.

One thing to do: If you use a VPN, or are thinking about one, read its privacy policy to see what it records and shares.
