The short version: On 27 October 2026, Google released Chrome 156. Google says this update includes 52 security fixes. On 29 October, Google released a newer Chrome 156 update with 21 more security fixes. Chrome usually updates itself, but you can check in about two minutes.

What happened
A security fix repairs a mistake in the software’s code. On 27 October 2026, Google’s Chrome Releases blog said the Stable channel (the version most people use) was updated to 156.0.8078.73 or .74 for Windows and Mac, and 156.0.8078.73 for Linux.
The post says the update “includes 52 security fixes.” Google gives each fix a severity label.
On 29 October 2026, Google released a newer update: 156.0.8078.79 or .80 for Windows and Mac, and 156.0.8078.79 for Linux. Google’s post says it “includes 21 security fixes.” In the list, 1 is labeled Critical, 19 are High and 1 is Medium. As of 30 Oct 2026, this is the newest version of Chrome for most people.
For Android, Google released Chrome 156 (156.0.8078.73) on 27 October and a newer version (156.0.8078.79) on 29 October. Google says each will become available on Google Play over the next few days.
Who is affected
Anyone who uses Chrome on a computer or an Android phone and has not yet updated. As of 30 Oct 2026, Google’s posts do not say that any of these flaws are being used in attacks.
On 27 October, Chrome on iPhone and iPad had its own update (version 157). Google’s post for it says “stability and performance improvements” and lists no security fixes. You can check in the App Store: tap your profile picture, scroll to “Available Updates”, and look for Chrome.
What we do not know yet
We do not know yet: how soon each person’s Chrome will update. Google also keeps some bug details private for now, so we cannot explain each flaw.
Do this today (under 10 minutes)
Google’s help page gives these steps for a computer: 1. Open Chrome. 2. At the top right, select More (the three dots). 3. Select Help, then About Google Chrome. Chrome checks for updates on this page and shows your version number. 4. If you see Relaunch, select it. Chrome saves your open tabs and reopens them. Incognito windows (private browsing windows) do not reopen. If you do not see Relaunch, you are on the latest version. If you do not want to restart right now, select Not now. The update applies the next time you restart Chrome.
Google adds that Linux users should use their package manager (the tool that installs software on Linux). Chromebook users need to update the Chromebook’s operating system (its main software).
On an Android phone: Chrome normally updates itself through Google Play. Google says Chrome 156 for Android “will become available on Google Play over the next few days.” To check, open the Play Store app, tap your profile picture at the top right, tap Manage apps & device, and look for Chrome under “Updates available”. If Chrome is there, tap Update. If it is not there yet, the update may not have reached your phone, so check again in a few days.
