Romance scam

In one sentence: A romance scam is when someone pretends to be a love interest online to gain your trust and then asks you for money.

Why it matters: Scammers use fake profiles on dating apps and social media, and ask for money for things like travel or medical bills. They may ask you to pay by gift card, wire transfer or crypto. It is never your fault. Report it to the FTC in the US. In England, Wales and Northern Ireland, report it to Report Fraud (formerly Action Fraud). In Scotland, call Police Scotland on 101.

One thing to do: Never send money or gifts to someone you have not met in person. If you feel unsure, talk to a friend today.
